Historic Renovations

Haynes Construction has completed 3 large-scale historic renovations in downtown Columbia: One at 2336 Park Street in historic Elmwood Park, one at 926 Laurens Street near the University of South Carolina, and one at 2226 Senate Street in the historic Waverly Community. These renovations tackled everything from extensive fire and water damage, to years of neglect and abandonment. It is our goal on all historic remodels to pay special attention to period details and to salvage as much of the home's origial features as possible. We are committed to community and historic preservation, and these jobs showcase our craftsmanship as well as our appreciation for the craftsmanship of our predecessors.

Our featured project below is the Park Street renovation located in the heart of the Historic Elmwood Park. The Park Street project was featured during the 2006 Spring Elmwood Park Tour of Homes. This 80 year old home suffered years of neglect and ultimately extensive fire damage. Haynes Construction started this extensive project by removing five 30 yard dumpsters of debris including household items, fire damaged materials, and yard debris.

Much of the original trim, doors, windows, and flooring was salvageable and in need of refinishing. The fire-damaged portion of the upstairs was re-framed, and all the old plaster and lath throughout the house was removed and replaced with new insulation and sheetrock.

A 400 square foot addition was added onto the Master Suite. What once was a small office area (the room the fire started in) was turned into a second upstairs bathroom, and the original upstairs bathroom was turned into a master bath with a whirlpool tub.

The downstairs wall between what used to be the den and the dining room was removed to make way for a bar that separates the dining room and the new, gourmet kitchen. What once was the kitchen was turned into a fourth bedroom.

French Doors in the new kitchen overlook a new 250 square foot deck. The back, front, and side yards feature simple landscaping and decorative concrete details for the driveway, and walkway.

The finished Park Street project is a 2,300 square foot historic renovation with original doors, trim, and hardwoods. New HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems were installed along with CAT 5 wiring. The home features 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a master suite with a private bath and sitting room, a formal living room, an open dining room, a gourmet kitchen complete with stainless steel appliances and custom decorative concrete countertops, and a large deck overlooking a landscaped yard.
